There are several songs, books, and movies referenced in Eve (Let it Be, The Giving Tree, Anna Karenina, Ghost, La Isla Bonita to name a few). I loved the idea that all music, art and culture–no matter what it was or when it was created–would be the same to Eve: it all comes from the time before the plague and belongs to a world that doesn’t exist anymore. These songs aren’t from the book–the playlist is a compilation of songs I thought about while writing Eve or ones that seemed to illuminate the sentiments in different parts of the book (there’s also a few of my favorites hidden in there). Nearly all have to do with love, discovery and loss.

1.) The Wall by Pink Floyd

Warning: this video will give you nightmares. It has since the first time I saw it my junior year of high school. It’s the ultimate song about tyrannical teachers.

2.) Sleep by Azure Ray

I imagine this as the soundtrack to that night before graduation, when Eve’s terrified and confused, trying to figure out what to do next.

3.) Across the Universe (cover by Fiona Apple)

Beautiful cover. Reminds me a lot of the confusion and excitement Eve first feels that morning outside the wall.

4.) Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch

In the dugout Eve gets closer to Caleb, and learns about the Trail and the labor camps. This song reminds me a lot of what she’s feeling and thinking then.

5.) Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez

Song about how confusing love can be.

6.) Howl by Florence and the Machine

I’ve always thought of this song as the unofficial theme song for Eve. I love the lines “Be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers/ Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters”. Reminds me of all those lessons at School.

7.) Hallelujah (cover by Jeff Buckley)

One of the most sorrowful songs I know.

8.) Time after Time (cover by Eva Cassidy)

I’m not a huge fan of the original, but love this cover about love and sacrifice.

9.) Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine

Love the line “I’m always in this twilight”. Feels true to the bittersweet end of the book.

What. The. AWESOME! No other YA series I know as such an epic soundtrack, let alone any soundtrack at all. The fact that this book as such great music and references woven in makes me really excited to read it. I can already tell it’s going to be way cooler than everything else out.

I’m telling all my friends to read this!
